YUSU.org branded a complete disgrace
by Editor
After weeks of technical problems, alligations of copyright theft, and
huge
criticism over the design and content, YUSU.org is again at the centre of
contraversy.
It was recently discovered that massively overpayed webmaster
Ranny placed malicious
code in certain sections of the www.yusu.org website
The purpose of this code was to damage the computers of users who
accidently viewed the
downloads section of the site.
"YUSU.org crashed my computer and I lost hours of work,
I don't really know much about computers and I didn't know what to do.
I was so shocked."
- Jim, Politics Student
However, Ranny feels that his actions were perfectly justified:
"As we do not want people to read the YU pages before we print the
magazine, so I just add a script their, so some stupid person will not
able to access the files. Why you try to open this
folder then?"
- Ranny, YUSU.org webmaster
However, no-one else seems to share his extreme opinion. Most find his
actions utterly
deplorable. The strength of feeling regarding this act of blatant act of
electronic terrorism have led to
various regular york.su users composing an emergency motion to add to the
upcoming UGM.
EMERGENCY MOTION: YUSU WEB PRESENCE
This Union Notes:
- The new YUSU webmaster
- The use of mailiciously destructive code on www.yusu.org
- That this mailiciously destructive code can crash and cause
damage to students' computers including the loss of work
- The Web Forums
- The removal by the Webmaster of forum postings
criticising his use of maliciously destructive code
- The hosting location of the website appears to be in America,
when perfectly adequete hosting is available within the University.
This Union Further Notes:
- The failure of YUSU to proceed with technological advances over the
last
few years
- That most students regularly use e-mail and the web
- That some students cannot access websites using Flash, and that by
using Flash,
YUSU is actively discriminating against visually impared students, who may
use screen-readers.
This Union Believes:
- That www.yusu.org should be fully
accessible to all
- That the web is an important tool for communication with students
- That YUSU has failed to make full use of the web
This Union Resolves:
- To censure the Webmaster for using maliciously destructive code on
www.yusu.org, when many other
non-destructive techniques
were available, and for removing critical formum postings
- To ensure that in the event of a repeat of either of these kinds of
behaviour, the
webmaster will lose his job
This Union Further Resolves:
- To mandate the Services Officer to ensure that the complete agendas of
future UGMs
(including all motions) are available on the web at least 24 hours before
the meeting in question
- To mandate the Services Officer in conjunction with the Communications
Officer to look at ways to
improve communication through the web and to report back to the next UGM?
- To mandate the Services Officer to ensure that a version of the
website which meets the University's
standard guide for web accessibility is created with immediate effect
