Science park plan to build nuclear reactor

Editor

York Science Park are facing huge public criticism over plans to build an experimental nuclear reactor.

Nuke-Industries Ltd based at the science park was this week granted a government license to build a nuclear reactor. NI Ltd are part of a huge international conglomerate that produce nuclear weapons.

The reactor is to be used to perfect the company's new method of enriching plutonium to a weapons grade level. It is hoped that this simpler process will allow enriched plutonium to be produced more quickly. This will help to reduce cost of nuclear weapons so that they are available to everyone, rather than the privileged few. It is expected that the cost will be reduced so greatly that nuclear weapons will be available to individuals and organisations, not just rich capitalist governments.

University Admin are very happy with Nuke-Industries plans to expand.

"This expansion will provide the University with a lot of much needed money. It will also provide many local jobs, and be of benefit to the entire country. I can't believe these environmental loonies are objecting. Nuclear power is safe."
- University Press Spokesperson

Objections come from the students against war movement, and many environment campaign groups including those based on campus. It is feared that the nuclear reactor will pose a huge threat to campus. Also, the extra traffic is not welcomed.

"I don't like the idea. I can see the science park from my window, and it really is a case of, "not in my back yard."

A large protest is planned for Wednesday afternoon, starting from Vanburgh-paradise at 2.30pm. If you feel strongly about this issue, or even if you do not, the SU strongly encourages you to come along.

"This is a brilliant opportunity to run around with a banner and then chain yourself to fence or something. Please come along and support us."
- SU environmental officer
